"For a long while, an entire childhood in fact, we wondered where the countryside actually was, or even if it truly existed..." EDGELANDS - Paul Farley and Michael Symmons Roberts
Just off The Pilgrim's Way in Kent lies a derelict industrial site known locally as The Island Site, like a dystopian relic of a lost civilisation it is littered with the remains of brick works and paper mills, overgrown with buddleia and teasels, it is now being developed as a solar farm. For years it has been a site only really known to locals, filled with burnt out cars and bikes, fly tipped white goods, bonfire remains, abandoned dens, holes in chain link fences to fish in the reservoir, the perfect playground for local youth. Down Down was a childhood name for it, a plea to go somewhere more exciting than the local rec, like many family's unique names, it stuck.
