Photography was an invention of the Victorian era and like many inventions it was the culmination of decades of research and experimentation. Joseph Niepce, Louis Daguerre, Thomas Wedgwood, Henry Fox Talbot, Anna Atkins, Julia Margaret Cameron all pioneered the use of this new medium and the developments they made are still very relevant to photography today. During this workshop you will experience the theatre of using a large format camera, similar to the technology used at the time. Using a dark cloth we will see images appear upside down and back to front on a ground glass screen. We will explore how the use of maths, measuring lengths, ratios and fractions, is integral to the photographic process. Finally we will create a large format black and white photograph using a dark slide. The result will be processed and scanned and sent back to you at a later date. This workshop is a great opportunity to get a hands on experience of large format film photography and the spectacle of Victorian era technology.
